Coming from the Sanskrit word for intention, what does ‘Sankalpa’ mean?

Sankalpa comes from the Sanskrit word for intention: San’ meaning ‘to become one with’ and ‘kalpa’ meaning ‘time and subconscious mind.’

Sankalpa is all about setting an intention that is aligned with your deepest desire and letting yourself embody it. With a Sankalpa, we return to it day after day. We let it become a part of us, a mantra, a guide for all our thoughts and actions.

When thinking about a name for the new Studio at Eastthorpe Hall, I loved the idea of encouraging intention and dedication to practicing yoga and self-care; and creating a place that promoted peace and gratitude. For me, Sankalpa really embodied the spirit of our hope: to provide a space full of calmness to help you relax and find your intention, and then helping you develop the practices to help you follow it.

I invite you to take a moment to think about what you would like your Sankalpa to be. Try to avoid words like ‘I must’ or ‘I should’ or ‘I will’ but instead choose words that will have a positive influence on you when you think them. Some examples might be:

“I choose joy”

“I am worthy of peace”

“I am grateful”

“Serenity is available to me”

If you have any questions, please do get in touch. I hope to see you at the Studio soon.
