What to Expect From Your First Yoga or Pilates Class
Starting something new can feel like a big step – especially when it comes to movement or exercise. It’s completely normal to feel a little unsure, or even nervous, before your first yoga or Pilates class.
The good news is, you’re not alone. Many people walk into their first class feeling exactly the same way and quickly realise there’s nothing to worry about.
You don’t need to be flexible
One of the most common worries I hear is: “I’m not flexible enough.”
The truth is, you don’t need to be flexible to start – you start to become flexible! Yoga and Pilates are there to help you become more flexible and comfortable in your body over time. Everyone begins somewhere, and variations are offered in class so that you can work at your own pace.
It’s not about being “good” at it
There’s no such thing as being good or bad at yoga or Pilates.
In these classes, the focus isn’t on getting everything right – it’s about how things feel in your body. You’re encouraged to move in a way that feels supportive and comfortable, rather than pushing or forcing anything.
And believe me when I say, everyone is concentrating on themselves rather than looking at what anyone else is doing.
What to bring to your first class
You don’t need much to get started.
- A yoga mat
- A bottle of water
- Comfortable clothing you can move in
All other equipment will be provided (unless asked in advance). If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to ask.
Classes are calm and welcoming
If you’re worried about walking into a room full of experienced people, it might help to know that many classes are made up of a mix of abilities including beginners.
In a small, friendly class, you’ll be guided throughout, with options to make movements easier or more challenging depending on what you need.
There’s no pressure to keep up, and you’re always free to pause or rest.
You’ll be guided every step of the way
You don’t need to know what you’re doing before you arrive. You’ll be talked through each movement clearly and gently, so you can simply follow along. Over time, things will start to feel more familiar – but there’s never any expectation to remember everything. There are a lot of pose names (and some of them are quite unusual!) it usually takes a few sessions to start learning and remembering them.
It’s as much about how you feel as what you do
While yoga and Pilates can help build strength and improve mobility, they’re also a chance to slow down. For many people, it’s one of the only times in the week where they can properly switch off, focus on their breathing and take a break from the busyness of everyday life.
You might be surprised how you feel afterwards
It’s very common to leave your first class feeling:
- a little lighter
- more relaxed
- more connected to your body
Sometimes the hardest part is simply walking through the door. After that, everything tends to fall into place!
